These Carlsbad Beach family photos at sunset were such a joy to capture. Some sessions feel extra meaningful from the very first message, and this one was exactly that.

I was contacted by the girlfriend of one of the family members, who shared that this was the first time this entire group had ever had their photos taken together. That alone already made it special, but what really stood out was how much intention she had behind it. She didn’t just want “nice photos”,  she wanted their personalities, their energy, and their dynamic to actually come through.  And they all accomplished that in the best way.

We met at Carlsbad Beach right before sunset, when the light starts to soften and everything feels a little more calm and golden. The group included a very beautiful mom, her two adult children, the girlfriend of her son (who organized everything), and the star of the show….the youngest family member and adorable son of mom’s daughter. A mix of generations, personalities, and energy…which is exactly what made it so fun to photograph.

Before we even started, I was told something I always love hearing:  “We are a fun/silly bunch. I would love to capture our unique personalities and get a couple ‘action’ shots.”  Say less.  That’s honestly my favorite kind of session and right up my alley.

From the beginning, I didn’t want this to feel stiff or overly structured. Instead, I gave them a little direction and then let them just… be together.  And once they relaxed into it, everything unfolded naturally.  There was a lot of laughter, hugs and fun candid moments.   The toddler definitely stole the show a few times (as toddlers tend to do), and the whole family just leaned into it instead of trying to make things perfect. That made all the difference.

As the sun started to drop lower, the light turned that magical soft golden tone that makes everything feel a little more calm and peaceful.  What I loved most about this session wasn’t just the light or the location, it was the fact that this family had never been photographed together like this before.  There’s something really special about freezing a moment in time that otherwise might not happen again in quite the same way. Different ages, different seasons of life, all together in one frame.  And getting to photograph that at Carlsbad Beach, with the ocean behind them and the sun setting… it felt like the perfect setting for it.

Carlsbad beach family photography

If you’ve been thinking about doing family photos but keep putting it off because “it’s not the right time” or “we’ll do it later,” this is your sign.  Later has a way of becoming much later than we expect.  And sessions like this are such a beautiful reminder that the messy, fun, slightly chaotic, perfectly imperfect versions of our families are usually the ones worth remembering most.
